Mario and Zelda are two of the most prominent franchises in video game history. Each series seemingly takes place in its own world, with its own heroes, villains, locations, and history. But what if these two worlds were somehow connected? Youtuber Dr.Wily explores this possibility in a video on his YouTube page. He bases his argument primarily on the common items and species found in both series. First, he examines the recorder (flute) found in the original Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. 3. The recorder emits the same sound in both games, and has the same function – warping Link/Mario to somewhere else. Another item discussed is the star bits and gratitude crystals from Super Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword, respectively. These items look exactly the same, even though they are obtained in different ways. He also discusses several species that appear in both series, including the Chain Chomp, Bob-Omb, Thwomp, and Lakitu. Since these common Mario enemies appear in multiple Zelda games, He argues that they are more than just cameo appearances or easter eggs.
He suggests several explanations for these overlaps throughout the video. Perhaps the Mario series takes place far in the future, after the last games of the Zelda franchise. Maybe the Mario franchise takes place in an alternate universe/timeline from the Zelda franchise, starting with the defeat of Demise in Skyward Sword. Or maybe the series take place in the same world, just in different countries/kingdoms.
