The History of Zelda Has Changed Once Again … and the Timeline Controversy Reintroduces Itself

Before the release of Hyrule Historia many Majora moons ago, Zelda fans speculated on the positioning of each title on the proverbial timeline. This provided hours of discussion amongst fans and hours of footage on YouTube. However, with the revelation of the official three pronged timeline in the first book, the speculation didn’t die, it just added confusion to the mix.

When Breath of the Wild released March 3rd, everyone in the community assumed that the game would be positioned at the end of the downfall timeline behind the Adventure of Link, and they were right … but also wrong? As confirmed by YouTuber Commonwealth Realm in their newest video, the latest title in the series sits at the end of all three timelines! WHHHHHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!

Aunoma and co. confirmed in the Master Works book (which is currently only available in Japan) and on the official Japanese Zelda website that the positioning of Breath of the Wild is solely for the purpose of speculation. It is up for fan interpretation as to why it is positioned there. Controversial!

Furthermore, the Oracle of Seasons and Ages games have also been moved from their original placement to a new position in the downfall timeline. This was confirmed in the latest Zelda Encyclopedia.

What do you guys think? Is the confirmed positioning of Zelda BOTW for you satisfying or disappointing? What about the new placement of the Oracle games?

Sound off in the comments below.
