Every year, Metacritic publishes its Game Publisher Rankings, recognizing the publishers with the best releases in a given year. 2017 marked the 8th edition of these rankings, and it should come as no surprise that Nintendo had a very strong year! Nintendo came in second place in the rankings, edged out by only Bethesda Softworks. The rankings are developed using a formula that takes into consideration average metascore for all games released in 2017, percent of products with good reviews (metascore of 75 or higher), percent of products with bad reviews (metascore of 49 or lower), and number of great titles (metascore of 90 or higher). Nintendo published 31 distinct titles this year with an average metascore of 7.8. This included three games rated as “great”: Breath of the Wild (metascore of 97 and Metacritic’s Game of the Year), Super Mario Odyssey (97), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (92). Bethesda Softworks took the narrow victory, with 12 distinct titles with an average metascore of 79.9.

You can check out Metacritic’s entire ranking here. I personally was a little shocked Nintendo didn’t take first place with such a strong year. How about you guys? Let us know who you thought the best publisher of the year was in the comments below!
