As earth shattering as its initial release was, the original Hyrule Historia timeline is now 7 years old and therefore lackin a few important pieces. Namely, the most recent Zelda games – A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes, and Breath of the Wild. In this new video, YouTuber GameXplain gives us a quick but important update of the current Legend of Zelda timeline.
On the official Japanese Legend of Zelda page, the “history” section has been updated to incorporate new additions and alterations into the timeline. From this newly updated timeline we learn:
1. Link’s Awakening’s placement in the timeline has shifted. Formerly, it was placed after the Oracle games and before the original Legend of Zelda. Now, it moved up to take place before the Oracle games. As a big fan of Link’s Awakening, I’m intrigued thinking about the fact that Link’s original assigned journey to Holodrum and Labrynna was perhaps delayed by his shipwreck and adventure into the Wind Fish’s dream. Or maybe it all happened in a few seconds?
2. A Link Between Worlds has been placed within the same timeline split, following the Oracle games.
3. Tri Force Heroes has been placed as well, as a direct sequel to A Link Between Worlds. Tri Force Heroes feels like a quirky side story compared to the normal type of quests Link has, so I like that ALBW Link wandered into the land of Hytopia after his main quest.
4. Lastly – Nintendo finally answers the most important timeline question of all. Well, kind of. Breath of the Wild is placed at the end of the timeline. The twist is, it’s at the end of all 3 splits of the timeline. What does this mean? When asked which timeline split the game belongs in, Fujibayashi says, “It’s up to the player’s interpretation.” Personally I think this calls for some very out-of-the-box thinking about time in the Zelda universe, and I’m excited for the conversations and theories that will come from this new nugget of information. As the narrator mentions in this video, “Perhaps a game will come along in the future that connects the 3 [timelines] together.”
As much as these new developments fill the missing gaps for us, it also raises many new questions and allows us new ways to interpret the lore. How do you feel about the new timeline information? Do you have your own theory for what Breath of the Wild’s placement means? Comment below and let us know!
