Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the Wii U exclusive that was recently ported to Nintendo Switch and 3DS, stars Captain Toad from the Mario series hunting for treasure through geometric puzzles. However, Toad was NOT the original protagonist envisioned for the game. Instead, Nintendo developed the concept with another puzzle-solving hero who wasn’t known for his jumping abilities in mind: Link! In a recent interview with Polygon, Captain Toad game director Shinya Hiratake and producer Koichi Hayashida revealed that the game concepts were originally created with Link in mind. However, the developers wanted the game to focus on exploration through the use of camera control, rather than combat. Link would be “a little too courageous” for what the developers had in mind. So Link was replaced by the treasure-obsessed Captain Toad. I personally couldn’t be happier with the change, because Captain Toad brings a certain light-heartedness to Treasure Tracker that I think wouldn’t have existed if Link was the protagonist.
